What does an archaeological dig look like? As part of the lottery-funded evaluation of Redesdale Archaeology Group’s project at Bremenium Roman Fort, High Rochester, I produced a Dig Diary which captures site notes and thoughts from a 4-week dig in July 2025.
This Dig Diary records a snap shot in time, recording what was known about the finds and the site as it was being revealed. Since then, of course, finds have been sent to various experts and we are learning more about the site from detailed analyses.
I hope that this Dig Diary serves as a detailed record of the dig, a souvenir to volunteers and an example to other projects. Huge thanks to the wonderful RAG volunteers and archaeologists who kept such diligent records to allow this to be possible.
