Celebrating Roman Bremenium
February 27, 2026It was brilliant to be at Great North Museum: Hancock today to celebrate the Newcastle’s Nature Networks project which has brought together organisations and communities to to create and restore habitat in the city. It was fantastic to hear from the different partners and volunteers who had been involved. I have been supporting the evaluation for this project, working with partners to identify and learn from project successes and challenges.
Today marked the end of a project which has been improving and creating habitats in the city since 2024. This event highlighted the strength of communities in this project – how working with local people in the places that matter most to them can make a difference both for people and nature. Not only has the project created more space for nature it has also given local people the opportunity to gain skills through training and volunteering.
A clear message was that, whilst project funding is ending, this really is just the start. I am looking forward to supporting the partnership to explore options for what might happen next to sustain an urban nature network.

Project partners: Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Ouseburn Farm, Ouseburn Trust, Northumbria University, Newcastle City Council, Natural History Society of Northumbria, Scotswood Garden Limited.
