Not what you might expect in a cathedral … but why not?

Last week I was away from home meeting a new client and I took the opportunity to pop into Peterborough Cathedral to say hi to the huge titanosaur that is currently installed there.

What a great idea to invite children and families into this historic space. The draw is not just the dinosaur but also the #Lego Travelling Bricks exhibition which was keeping most young visitors very busy.

It made me think about how beautiful places can and should be a backdrop for all kinds of activities and pushing beyond the expected gives many more people the opportunity to experience new environments.

There is something important in allowing children just to be children in all kinds of place and not limiting them to brightly coloured, plastic play areas. The word Lego derives from Danish words meaning play well and, as far as I could observe, that is exactly what was happening here. What a privilege for children to be able to play in this historic setting.

I would also have loved to have seen the choir’s reaction the first time they saw that huge skull looming over the choir stalls!
