New English IMD Published

Lots of funders ask you to identify a need for your project and, often, this is linked to local deprivation. We all know that deprived communities have multiple needs – low income is seemingly inextricably linked to poor health and lower educational attainment for example. The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are a useful tool in evidencing local need.

The IMD is ‘the official measure of relative deprivation for small areas’. It ranks areas of England from 1 to 32,844 (1 being the most deprived and 32,844 the least deprived). As well as an overall ranking, each area is ranked against seven ‘domains of deprivation’. This is a really helpful starting point in evidencing some of the challenges facing local communities.
